5 Obstacles Stopping You From Achieving Your Goals

By Piyush Sharma

Sometimes going by the book, following every rule and being on the right track at all times is simply not enough when it comes to succeeding in life. Let’s take this case for example:

A guy graduates from a well-reputed engineering college and prepares for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for two consecutive years. But he has fears, or you can say is afraid of the final result. He doubts if he will be able to fulfil his promise to himself of getting into one of the top institutes in the country. He has invested two whole years of his life into this and has given his blood, sweat and tears. Interestingly, he is a bright student and is gifted with a photogenic memory too. So clearly, lack of talent is not driving this fear. Then what is it?

Just like him, you too could possibly be doing everything right yet somehow missing your goals by just an inch. Here are some reasons why you are stuck in the rut.

1. Routine

You might be following a routine that does not match your goal’s requirement. You wake up, smoke up 6 cigarettes, leave for your job or coaching, come back and then get high and pass out. Next day you wake up late, you miss your class or that important meeting. (Big surprise!)  Your latest and short period resolution of maintaining a healthy lifestyle goes into dust simply because of that addiction.

2. Surroundings

All that stuff lying around your house, dead, as well as living, is bringing you back into the same lifestyle even when you tried your best to change. In some typical cases, it may also include your friends or your roommates who are their 24*7 holding you back in some way or the other. They are dragging you back into the routine which is never gonna help you. Are you getting my point?

3. Procrastination

Your habit of delaying, ignoring important things could be the one and only reason of you not attaining your goals. “Tomorrow never comes” people. It is such an innocent yet deadly vice that puts your entire life on a standstill and you don’t even realise how precious time is slipping by. So get.your.shit.together.now.

4. Fear

Fear of failure. Fear of loss. Fear of emptiness. Fear of the unknown. Even fear of success. All this can constitute as one major obstacle. It is okay and only natural to be afraid, but letting that fear control your life becomes an impediment in achieving goals. So let it go.

5. Lack of Mentorship

They come in many forms; mentors, gurus, advisers, teachers and even friends. It is very important to have one such person in your life who helps you keep your eye on the prize and also help you out when you are stuck.

If people don’t work out for you, then there are always books waiting to fill you up with guidance. Don’t think you can do this alone, everyone needs help.

So what is the next step?

Change. In any form. From your surroundings, to your lifestyle to your very food habits. You need to set your priorities right and convert them into your daily routine to get it done each day. You need to be strong and let go off fears in your head. And yes, you can seek some guidance from time to time from wherever you feel is apt for you.

That’s all you need, ‘a change’, be it the smallest possible alteration in your life. Do it and then watch how everything else will fall into place itself. Take that first step and see how things work out.

Why do professional writers feel they need to use crass language? Can’t you think of another way to tell me to straighten up and fly right without using the word “shit”? Do you think it impresses people, I for one am not impressed. Neither am I impressed when you post good information but ruin it with a sentence like this: “In some typical cases, it may also include your friends or your roommates who are their 24*7 holding you back in some way or the other.” I am sure you would prefer to read something where I use the right word like where instead of wear or there, their and they’re.
